Erika Baglyas : Words Are Forcing Me, photo series, 2003-2004
What I am thinking about is that I’m living, said a 20-meter-long text I stretched over the water surface of the River Danube in Soroksár: Commuters on the sub-urban trains from or to the Csepel Island could see this text on their way to work or back home. The text My Solitude Comes from Giving Up was painted on the bicycle road leading to the Iron Mill in Dunaújváros (formerly named Stalin’s Town). I placed texts in Moscow Square, in the windows of the self-government of the one-time Stalin’s Town, in shop windows and on telephone boots, etc.
I used the shop windows, buildings, sidewalks and the river as if they were parts of my body; while I shared my thoughts in public spaces, I wrote a new sentence, overheard from others, on my skin every day. I displayed these sentences to the camera in my home or my most personal surroundings. It’s only what I couldn’t become that hurts, I overheard from the conversation between elderly people in the street. After all, why not humiliate myself?, I heard an art historian muttering under the nose at a conference, while balancing on top of a table in an attempt to put a curtain back on its hooks. I did my best to get on with everybody, shouted a woman in my face as I went past her in the underpass to the subway, while the child she was dragging behind just said, I promise not to be naughty again.

Egyszer a soroksári Duna vízfelületére kifeszítettem egy 20 méter hosszú feliratot: Arra gondolok, hogy élek. A csepeli HÉV vonalán közlekedők láthatták a szöveget munkába vagy hazafelé menet. A dunaújvárosi Vasműbe vezető kerékpárútra felfestettem, hogy Magányom lemondásból fakad. Került szöveg a Moszkva térre, a néhai Sztálinváros önkormányzatának ablakaiba, kirakatokba, telefonfülkékre stb. Gyermekét a metróaluljáróban rángató nő ordította a képembe, amikor elhaladtam mellette Én igazán alkalmazkodtam mindenkihez, mire a kisfiú csak ennyit mondott Nem leszek rossz többé.
